Science, Society and Sustainability Series 2018 launched by Science Unit

The Science Unit kicked off the Science, Society and Sustainability Series 2018 with two events, namely the “Studies of Fungi and Applications to Public Health” on 13 September and the “Film Screening – The True Cost: Fair Trade and Green Consumption” on 27 September, which attracted a full house attendance.  The two events assembled 100 and 140 participants respectively, including staff and students of Lingnan, as well as the general public.

Prof LIM Young-Woon, Associate Professor of the School of Biological Sciences of the Seoul National University shared the linkage between fungal research and public health.  The audience were impressed by the findings of the research of pigeon faeces together with the interesting stories told.

The film The True Cost reveals the untold story of the fashion industry, in particular how labour is being exploited, as we are enjoying fast and cheap fashion in the developed countries.  Mr Willy KWONG, Executive Director of The Jane Goodall Institute and Ms Kayla WONG, Founder of Basics for Basics were invited to share their insights and ideas on sustainable fashion.  In-depth discussions were generated, leading the participants to reflect on how consumer behaviour impacts the fashion market, and most importantly, how consumers can contribute to the sustainability of the society.
